Jas 4:1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
"Pleasure"= in the Greek is "hedone" = sensual delight
Hedone was the Greek goddess of pleasure, desire, lust. Hedone is where we get "hedonism" which even to this day has the connotation of absolute, physical pleasure (there is even a couples' resort in Jamaica (clothing optional) called Hedonism II).
Hedone was the daughter of Eros and Psyche. She was most often associated specifically with sensual pleasure. That is in line with Eros which is where we get the term "erotic" (sexual love).
John Piper at the Shepherds Conference 2024 said our love for God is "erotic to the core" and that eros leads leads to obedience.
Piper originally married Christ Jesus to hedonism in his "Desiring God" book on "Christian hedonism". That was horrific, blasphemous, and anti-Christ demonic talk. But in March 2024 at ShepCon, he went FURTHUR DEEP into the dunghill of the paganism of Greek mythology and pulled out Hedone's father Eros and applied that tooo loving God.
Isa 6:3 And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;
1Pe 1:15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
In all uses of "hedone" in the NT (twice in James 4), the word is of sinful fleshly behavior Christians are meant to war against:
Luke 8:14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.
Tit 3:3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.
2Pe 2:13 suffering wrong as the wage for their wrongdoing. They count it pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, while they feast with you. 14 They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children!
Isa 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Piper might as well have said that temple prostitution is our spiritual act of worship. It is that insidious. It is worldly philosophy, it is of the Epicureans of Paul's day (Acts 17) that God righteously condemns. So to use the world's ways and means:
Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Eph 4:17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.
Eph 4:18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.
Eph 4:19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.
Eph 4:20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!—
Eph 4:21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,
Eph 4:22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,
Eph 4:23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,
Eph 4:24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Interestingly in Titus 1:14 God condemns being devoted to Jewish myths. How much more Greek mythology?
"Eros" is self-centered, self-satisfying love, which is wholly contrary to "agape" which is selfless, self-sacrificing love. Words are precise in Scripture.
Piper doubled down DEEPER into paganism through Greek mythology which has absolutely nothing to do with biblical Christianity in any way, married it to Christ and the Christian as if sexual love and hedonism is holy, spiritual, and pleasing to God. This is a demonic attack on God and His Word.
