Well, a good thing wins out: Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown beat out X-Factor in ratings last night. That's a good thing.
Why?
Because the Charlie Brown movie rightly portrays how empty materialism is and that the Christmas season isn't really about buying all kinds of stuff (which will leave us empty and hallow and discontented) and as Lucy says, "involvement".
The reality is that the reason for the season is the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, God come in the flesh, on the behalf of many sinners, to live, die, and rise again from the dead, according to the Scriptures.
(Here is Linus in his monologue about the true meaning of Christmas, as he recites Luke 2:8-12)
Trying to come in first place (Snoopy won that for his Christmas light contest) or become famous (a la X Factor) won't bring happiness. Neither will stuff.
Forgiveness and salvation from our sins and the wrath of God to come is what brings true joy because it's grounded and centered on the glorious, majestic Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. We are ill-deserving of salvation, much less Heaven and eternal life with Him; He is infinitely worth all of our praise and to be glorified for eternity because of who He is as well as what He has done.
