Matt Chandler Is No Different Than John Piper: both compromise and endorse grave error

Given Chandler's pulpit sharing with Emergents at Steve Furtick's "Code Orange" conference the other night and given how many folks are promoting Chandler's gospel preaching that night and thus giving him somewhat of a free pass, here's a little clarity and the context of Matt Chandler. Remember folks, he is an example of how false teachers secretly sneak in among you. A false teacher will say some right things. But as is the case with John Piper, Matt Chandler endorses serious error and heretics, along with sharing the pulpit with them.

Chandler is a Reformergent Charismatic, h
e endorses Emergent  New Ager, Leonard Sweet and Frank Viola's book "The Jesus Manifesto", he consistantly has shared the platform of the false teachers within the Emergent Church Movement , Saddleback "Conversations", Acts 29  where he is a Board member (the denomination (yes it is) that has promoted  planting a church in a gay bar), the inter-faith Elephant Room.

More: http://herescope.blogspot.com/2010/06/great-confluence.html The previous Herescope post looked at the big picture of how the Emerging Church movement is connecting with the New Apostolic Reformation, as exemplified by the release of the new book Jesus Manifesto co-authored by Leonard Sweet and Frank Viola. There are even more troubling connections, and these lead straight into the New Age movement.

These things show he is NOT reformed, and violates 2John 9-10.

2Jn 1:9  Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. 10  If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; 11  for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.

1Co 15:33 Do not be deceived: "Bad company ruins good morals."

As I quoted in my piece where John MacArthur  exhorts Christians to stop giving a free pass to these compromising "Reformers":

The main problem is that many religious leaders today say one thing and teach another. If you ask Gregory Boyd or the other “Open View of God” heretics if they believe in the “omniscience” of God, they will say, “Yes.”Dumb Christians are satisfied at this point and go their merry way deceived and hoodwinked. But if you force them to define the term “omniscience,” they end up denying that God knows all things! They claim that God does not and cannot know the future.

Just because someone says, “I believe in sola scriptura,” does not mean he really believes in it. If he elsewhere says that the Bible is not the final authority in faith and practice, he has denied insubstance what he supposedly affirmed as a slogan. Heretics have always done this. What they affirm with the right hand is what they deny with the left hand. It does not matter what doctrine is at stake.

Sorry to comment here, but was wondering if you know anything about Jared C Wilson or Tim Keller. I'm searching but not finding much about them, other than their own sites. I'm trying to see exactly where they line up biblically. So far from what I read of Jared, I'm finding him to be sound, but I just discovered him tonight (like 2 hours ago) so I've not had much of any time to really dig in deep. I will continue to search and read, but thought you might know a little about one or both of these men. Thanks so much!

No problem Christy. I don't know anything about Jared Wilson, but if anything pops up, I'll let you know. With Time Keller I do have info on him: http://surphside.blogspot.com/2009/10/tim-keller-and-rick-warren-reflections.html

http://www.facebook.com/notes/ken-ham/tim-keller-again-endorses-evolution/205325349512939 which states in part: "

Tim Keller ( Senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan) again endorses evolution: "Belief in evolution can be compatible with a belief in a historical fall and a literal Adam and Eve."

You can read the entire sad article at: http://thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/tgc/2011/06/06/sinned-in-a-literal-adam-raised-in-a-literal-christ/ "

Keller is definitely a problem. He openly endorses lectio divina and contemplative teachers such as Jan Johnson.

Thanks for sharing, I'll read your links more in a couple days. I did more digging on Tim Keller (didn't take long) and found him to be false "prophet". I can say I came across Jared Wilson via The Gospel Collition, which I'd never been to before.
I'm still not finding much on Jared and I still am very cautious of him.

I have to say though, I'm so thankful that I have God's word and that although we can have good references who have studied God's word, but I know that the Lord will give me just as much wisdom in understanding his word as any of these biblical scholars.

God's Blessings and thanks for always sharing your insights, opinions, and research, but most of all your love of Christ.

I guess I'm confused. Are you saying that Matt Chandler preaches that God is not over everything? That he preaches that God doesn't know all things, that He doesn't sit over us and sees everything? Are you saying that Matt somehow preaches against- God who just doesn't see everything; He sees it all at once from beginning to end?

That's what I'm getting out of this. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I just want to make sure I'm tracking with what you are saying.

KB,

Sorry, no. My point is the point of Morey:

"The main problem is that many religious leaders today say one thing and teach another...Just because someone says, “I believe in sola scriptura,” does not mean he really believes in it. This is what Chandler (and others like Driscoll and Piper) does. Claim the 5 Solas then deny it elsewhere. Hope that clarifies my point for you. Thanks for stopping by.

He also went on Daystar network, whose owners endorse heretics such as John Paul Jackson, Benny Hinn, Joyce Meyer and the like. How sad. I was fond of Matt Chandlers teaching.

You may not see this since the post is older but please read the new book about Tim Keller by some reformed brothers in the Presbyterian church. Engaging Keller is the book. Keller is orthodox in his theology but very wrong in several ways he teaches about sin etc. The book is excellent and loving but very clear. Great primer forban understanding of basic systematic theology. I wish more of my Baptist brothers in seminary leadership or otherwise had the guts to address the easy believism of 90 percent of SBC pastors. Call them by name and point and counter point their theology in print. God bless your desire to be decerning.

Ah found a review of the book "Engaging Keller" @ http://www.reformation21.org/shelf-life/engaging-with-keller.php

While I'm not a fan of Reformers, particularly the New Calvinists and Reformation21, I find it interesting that those inside his camp are questioning Keller on some basic and fundamental doctrinal issues. Sadly, as is usually the case, intent is held up as a justifiable pass, letting just the "concern" be enough. Instead, a man who claims by position of "elder", much less a graduate of seminary, to be a mature Christian who should understand the basics of Christianity, should be considered dangerous and an illegitimate teacher of biblical Truth. Then again, if the standard of truth is merely the Westminster Confession of Faith, then that's too low of a standard. If its Scripture, then Keller should be rejected.

It just goes to show how biblical doctrine is considered merely opinion or something that people can disagree on and still be considered Christian. That's not according to Scripture.

Moreover, again, a highly educated communicator seems to be unable to communicate clearly basic, although deep, doctrinal truths.

What is your citation where Chandler or Piper or Keller agree with a Sola on one hand, and then denies it with the other? I see that you are denying them and listening them as false prophets, but no proof of them directly denouncing a Sola to be true. That seems unhelpful.

Caleb, by their doctrine and practice. To claim "sola scriptura" and yet hold to evolution and mysticism are two examples. I have extensive articles on these men, particularly Piper, that demonstrates this repeatedly.
