The Hopelessness of the New Generation

I heard this on the radio the other day and found it interesting--here's the transcript:

CALLER:  Hi, Rush.  Last week you were talking about why my generation doesn't have hope.  I've been thinking a lot about that, and it struck me that for thousands of years of human history, for almost all the history of the United States, human beings have understood that we have a choice about how our lives are gonna play out, and we have a way to overcome our backgrounds, if we come out of a rough background. 

But a movement has been mounting. You've talked about it before, but it's kind of taboo to talk about, I've found. A movement has been mounting throughout probably the nineteenth century, that grew momentum in the twentieth century, and possibly for the first time, it's been universally accepted in my generation that you're born with it. You don't have a choice, you're born with it. 

"Dad was an alcoholic? You're gonna be an alcoholic.  Your mom was a drug addict? you're gonna be a drug addict.  You've got bipolar disorder?  Oh, you were born with that. Take this medication. By the way, if you ever get off it, you're gonna commit suicide.  It's what all our statistics tell us," and it seems to me that psychology and psychiatry and so-called science has been betraying my generation.  Why would we have hope?  We're told that we're born this way; we can't do anything about it.

Both Limbaugh and another caller give examples of men in the past who overcame enormous obstacles instead of being tied to their "lot in life" as it were, like Alexander Hamilton, Christopher Columbus, Lincoln. Even Steven Jobs and Ashton  Kutcher.

I think this is directly tied to psychology/evolution, just in a different sphere. In other words, its a secular worldview with evolution and anti-God at its heart. It starts with a presupposition that  God doesn't exist and genes are everything, thus everyone is controlled by nature and thus a victim. What Socialism is doing is bringing us into a caste system where they say you will always be poor even though you don't deserve it, so give up and give in and turn to the government.

I'm not advocating all that Jobs or Kutcher proclaim even in the videos. But I am saying that this view that we are tied to genetics (for Charismatics that would  also include the "generational curse" claim), once-an-alcoholic-always-an-alcoholic mentality. There is no freedom from sin and bad behavior. There is no victory for those in Christ Jesus, even, in their view. Just accept it as your lot in life--take a pill to make you feel better. Excuses for bad choices and for complacency is all that it is.

The reality is what Scripture states: that we are enslaved to that which we obey. Those outside of Christ are enslaved to sin, those in Christ are slaves to righteousness (Him, really). Those in Christ were freed by Christ Jesus from the enslavement of sin and death.

Joh 8:34  Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 
Joh 8:35  "The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever.
Joh 8:36  "So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

Rom 6:6  knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 

Rom 6:7  for he who has died is freed from sin. 

Rom 8:1  Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 

Rom 8:2  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 

In Christ, there is victory over not only sin, but its penalty of death. At the cross of Christ, the old was nailed and put to death; in Him we are NEW CREATIONS. We are forgiven of all our sins and given new, eternal life in Christ Jesus. That's true peace, hope, and life!
