Luke 24:27 And beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them
the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
2Ti
3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof,
for correction, for training in righteousness; 2Ti 3:17 that the man of God may
be adequate, equipped for every good work.
Andy Stanley, son of Charles Stanley, is continuing to teach heresy. Now he's divorcing the majority of Scripture, the Old Testament, to the category of "not needed, but it's still part of Scripture". Below are excerpts from the report by "The Christian Post":
Quote:
In the final part of a recent sermon series, Stanley explained that while he believes that the Old Testament is "divinely inspired," it should not be "the go-to source regarding any behavior in the church."
Andy Stanley preached last month about Acts 15, which described how the early church decided that Gentile converts did not need to strictly observe Jewish law to become Christians.
"[First century] Church leaders unhitched the church
from the worldview, value system, and regulations of the Jewish
scriptures," said Stanley.
"Peter,
James, Paul elected to unhitch the Christian faith from their Jewish scriptures,
and my friends, we must as well."
Stanley argued that it had to be done for the same reason the
church in Acts 15 did so, which
was so that "we must not make it difficult for those Gentiles who are
turning to God."
For Stanley, the
difficulty lay with the Old Testament and his concern that many Christians are
turning away from the faith because of certain passages in the Hebrew Bible.
Stanley argued that the early church showed that there was a need to move past the Old
Testament for the sake of gentile believers and that the resurrection of Jesus
was enough.
"Jesus' new
covenant, His covenant with the nations, His covenant with you, His
covenant with us, can stand on its own two nail-scarred resurrection
feet. It does not need propping up
by the Jewish scriptures," noted
Stanley.

I'll contradict Stanley by
using Scripture:
Jesus held high the OT and that is was foundational:
Luk 16:31 "But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.'"
Luk 16:31 "But he said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead.'"
Jesus taught all about
Himself using the OT:
Mat 5:17
"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not
come to abolish, but to fulfill. 18 "For truly I say to you,
until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass
away from the Law, until all is accomplished.
Luk 24:27 And beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
Luk 24:27 And beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
The Bereans were noble for
testing Paul against the Scriptures (the OT):
Act 17:11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily, to see whether these things were so.
Act 17:11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily, to see whether these things were so.
Paul taught from the OT:
Rom 3:4 May it never be! Rather, let God be found
true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written, "THAT THOU
MIGHTEST BE JUSTIFIED IN THY WORDS, AND MIGHTEST PREVAIL WHEN THOU ART
JUDGED."
Paul said that the OT gives
wisdom unto salvation AND tells believers how to live:
2Ti 3:15 and that from childhood you have
known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to
salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture
is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction,
for training in righteousness; 17 that the man of God may be
adequate, equipped for every good work.
Peter
taught from the Prophets:
Act 2:14 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven,
raised his voice and declared to them: "Men of Judea, and all you who live
in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give heed to my words.
Act 4:11 "He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by
you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE VERY CORNER stone.
Quotes:
Psa 118:22
The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief corner stone.
Act 4:23 And when they had been released, they went to
their own companions, and reported all that the chief priests and the
elders had said to them.
Act 4:24 And when they heard this, they lifted
their voices to God with one accord and said, "O Lord, it is Thou who
DIDST MAKE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA, AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM,
Act 4:25 who by the Holy Spirit, through the
mouth of our father David Thy servant, didst say, 'WHY DID THE GENTILES RAGE,
AND THE PEOPLES DEVISE FUTILE THINGS?
Act 4:26 'THE KINGS OF THE EARTH TOOK THEIR STAND, AND
THE RULERS WERE GATHERED TOGETHER AGAINST THE LORD, AND AGAINST HIS CHRIST.'
Act 4:27 "For truly in this city there were
gathered together against Thy holy servant Jesus, whom Thou didst anoint, both
Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,
Act 4:28 to do whatever Thy hand and Thy purpose
predestined to occur.
Quoted:
Gen 1:20 Then God said, "Let
the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the
earth in the open expanse of the heavens."
Gen 1:25 And God made the beasts
of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything
that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good.
Exo 20:11 "For in six days
the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and
rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made
it holy.
Psa 2:1 Why are the nations in an uproar, And the
peoples devising a vain thing?
Psa 2:2 The kings of the earth
take their stand, And the rulers take counsel together Against the LORD and
against His Anointed:
James taught from the OT—and that on how to behave
(which is a heart issue):
Jas 2:8 If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law, according to the Scripture, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF," you are doing well.
Jas 2:9 But if you show partiality, you are
committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
Jas 2:10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet
stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
Jas 2:11 For He who said, "DO NOT COMMIT
ADULTERY," also said, "DO NOT COMMIT MURDER." Now if you do not
commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the
law.
Quoted:
Lev 19:18 'You shall not take
vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall
love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.
Deu 5:17 'You shall not murder.
Deu 5:18 'You shall not commit adultery.
James taught on the sound doctrine of faith and
sanctification using the OT:
Jas 2:22 You see that faith was working with his
works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected;
Jas 2:23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says,
"AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS
RIGHTEOUSNESS," and he was called the friend of God.
Quotes:
Gen 15:6 Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned
it to him as righteousness.
Peter taught on sanctification using the OT just as Jesus did:
1Pe 1:15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;
1Pe 1:16 because it is written, "YOU SHALL BE
HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY."
Quoted:
Lev 11:44 'For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean with any of the swarming things that swarm on the earth.
Lev 11:44 'For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean with any of the swarming things that swarm on the earth.
Lev 11:45 'For I am the LORD, who
brought you up from the land of Egypt, to be your God; thus you shall be holy
for I am holy.'"
Mat 5:17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the
Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill.
Mat 5:18 "For truly I say to
you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall
pass away from the Law, until all is accomplished.
Mat 5:48 "Therefore you are to be perfect, as
your heavenly Father is perfect.
Deu 18:13 "You
shall be blameless before the LORD your God.
Paul taught from the OT to teach proper behavior for
believers:
Eph 6:1 Children, obey
your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Eph 6:2 HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the
first commandment with a promise),
Eph 6:3 THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU
MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH.
Quoted:
Exo 20:12 "Honor your father
and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD
your God gives you.
Paul taught about the Gospel and earnestly contending
for the faith from the OT:
Eph 6:14 Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR
LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS,
Eph 6:15 and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE
PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE;
Eph 6:16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of
faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the
evil one.
Eph 6:17 And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the
sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Quoted:
Isa 59:17 And He put on
righteousness like a breastplate, And a helmet of salvation on His head; And He
put on garments of vengeance for clothing, And wrapped Himself with zeal as a
mantle.
Isa 52:7 How lovely on
the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace And
brings good news of happiness, Who announces salvation, And says to
Zion, "Your God reigns!"
Paul taught about total depravity of all men and thus
our dire need for salvation, using the OT:
Rom 3:9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at
all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin;
Rom 3:10 as it is written, "THERE IS NONE
RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;
Rom 3:11 THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE
WHO SEEKS FOR GOD;
Rom 3:12 ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE
BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE."
Rom 3:13 "THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH
THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING," "THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER
THEIR LIPS";
Rom 3:14 "WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND
BITTERNESS";
Rom 3:15 "THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD,
Rom 3:16 DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS,
Rom 3:17 AND THE PATH OF PEACE HAVE THEY NOT
KNOWN."
Rom 3:18 "THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR
EYES."
Rom 3:19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it
speaks to those who are under the Law, that every mouth may be closed, and all
the world may become accountable to God;
Rom 3:20 because by the works of the Law no flesh will
be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of
sin.
Quoted:
Psa 14:1 For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt,
they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good.
Psa 14:2 The LORD has looked down from heaven upon the
sons of men, To see if there are any who understand, Who seek after God.
Psa 14:3 They have all turned aside; together they
have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one.
Psa 5:9 There is
nothing reliable in what they say; Their inward part is destruction itself;
Their throat is an open grave; They flatter with their tongue.
Psa 140:3 They sharpen their tongues as a serpent;
Poison of a viper is under their lips. Selah.
Psa 10:7 His mouth is full of
curses and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness.
Isa 59:7 Their feet run to evil,
And they hasten to shed innocent blood; Their thoughts are thoughts of
iniquity; Devastation and destruction are in their highways.
Isa 59:8 They do not know the way
of peace, And there is no justice in their tracks; They have made their paths
crooked; Whoever treads on them does not know peace.
There are far more examples than these, but you get the point. Every apostle
taught from the OT because the NT was still being written and the OT is the
authoritative Word of God that teaches about Christ, the covenants, including
the New Covenant, and every sound doctrine from Creation, to the historic fall
of Adam and Eve, to God’s standard of holiness (sanctification), to
Justification by faith alone, to eschatology and God’s inflexible justice as
well as all His perfections.
Stanley is not merely an ignoramus (he truly has no
idea what the OT teaches nor it’s connection to the NT and being foundational),
but he’s hostile toward it. Just like the ancient serpent in the Garden.
Stanley
dares to sit in judgment of God's Word as if it's his right and as if Scripture
can be divorced from itself. It can't. It's a whole unit of Truth, bound
together by God Himself. This man is a child of the devil. He. Hates. God.
