My mother had a saying she used often when we were growing up (and she loved it so much she put it on a paddle and hung it up), "To know God is to know that all the rules will be fair, and that there will be wonderful surprises."
Sounds nice at first glance.
But what is "fair"? Its not what most people think.
"Fair" is justice. It's getting what is deserved. "Fair" is getting the just punishment for our sins which is eternal torment.
"Fair" is not mercy or grace. Mercy is withheld due punishment and grace is unmerited favor. Nor is "fair" getting rewarded for God's work in us and through us.
People want what they think they deserve and call that "fair", but we we must always look at things from God's righteous perspective.
I don't want what is "fair"; I want God's abundant grace and mercy.
