Rom 16:17 Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them.
Rom 16:18 For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting.
What doctrines or teachings did they learn? What did Paul, the other apostles, and the Prophets write about?
Everything pertaining to life and godliness, starting with Genesis 1:1.
Therefore anyone who divides from the sound doctrine of Creation in six literal days by God's voice, is in direct and serious sin against Him, causing divisions among the saints. Leaders who do this do so alongside flattering and smooth speech in order to deceive others and gain a following. We are to reject such men, not give them a platform nor consider their condemned opinions as worthy of Christ nor His saints. Such folly is filth and not pure, healthy food for the soul of those in Christ.
Moreover, the teaching we have learned covers things like modest dressing, speech, conversation, source of wisdom, the Lord's Table, baptism, parenting, working to earn money, who to support, etc. Anyone who calls these things "opinion" are teaching contrary to Scripture. If a person can "divide" on any part of sound doctrine, then he's in rebellion and he's causing division.
