HUNDREDS of strangers turned out to pay their final respects to a war veteran who died with no close friends or family.
An internet campaign saw a huge outpouring of support to honour Harold Jellicoe Percival, who was fittingly laid to rest at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month.
Mr Percival was one of the last remaining members of the Bomber Command, also known as the Dambusters.
He died in a care home in Lancashire last week but had no close family and lost the love of his life in the 1930s.
Edmund Jacobs, of Roland L Whitehead and Daughter funeral directors, placed a notice in the paper, saying "It doesn't sit well with me that somebody who has served their country can be forgotten about, that his service can go un-noted.”
Today after the service he said: "It shows people do care. This was a 99-year-old man with only a couple of very distant relatives who as a war hero was going to his last resting place alone.
"The British people responded like only the British can."
